Getting it Right... almost always starts with Getting it Wrong

Getting is right almost always starts with getting it wrong.  Unless we put ourselves or someone else into danger, the only bad thing about making mistakes is failing to try again.  And again.  And again.  And as many times as it takes to get it right.

That process, of trying it over and over until it works, has been my mantra in life, and in writing.  How many times have we said, or heard, ‘we learn from our mistakes,’ or perhaps, if we’re lucky, ‘we learn from the mistakes of others.’

As a writer, I often read, to see what others are writing.  I read what is selling and I read what is getting good reviews.  I also read what is new, or does not have good reviews, or what might not be selling, yet.  I read what appeals to me.  This is how I learn from others’ mistakes, and successes.

As I writer, I look at my own work.  I put my work out there.  I see which of my books sell, and which of them earn good reviews.  This is how I learn from my own mistakes, and possibly, from my own successes.

Getting it right, as an author, can be a long process.  It almost certainly very unlikely that the first novel we write is going to be a great success.  Almost any author will tell you that they did a lot of writing before they ended up with a work that they were happy with, or that sold well, or that got good reviews.  But, the key is to keep trying.  That means to keep writing.

In my case, I write because I want to write.  I write what I want to write.  I write for my own pleasure.  I share my writing in the hope that some will like it, and perhaps, the hope that I might somehow tell a story that will have an impact.

But, most importantly, I realize that it’s okay to get it wrong, if I keep trying to get it right.

Barnes and Noble sales results are amazing!

Thousands are finding my books at Barnes and Noble.  Led by Playing the Baseball Card, with 9 reviews and 31 ratings averaging 4 stars, I can report that I am amazed, astonished, and awed by the numbers of my books reaching the hands of readers through Barnes and Noble (B&N.com).  B&N has now distributed well over 30% of all the many thousands of my books in the hands of readers.  I got my latest numbers just yesterday, and as I had one of my characters saying recently, "Wow.  Just, wow."

Playing the Baseball Card is my top book on B&N, but A Family Legacy: The Watson Works and Playing the 'Son' Card are also doing very well.  In fact, all three of those books are well into the top 1% sales rank at B&N.  Absolutely extraordinary.  I am truly awed by these kinds of numbers, and more motivated than ever to keep on writing.

Thanks for reading,
Wil

What about this "Smashwords?"

Smashwords is the secret to my success, or at least the secret to my books being read. I have posted about Smashwords a lot over the last year, since I first published with Smashwords on 12/12/2009. In that time, my books have been downloaded/purchased many thousands of times.

Smashords is the reason. Smashwords is the answer to authors who ask: How can I get my books out there?

How does this happen? Here's a Smashwords presentation, by the founder, Mark Coker. Have a look at this Smashwords slideshow (below), and,

Happy Reading.

New York Times says more authors doing what I'm doing

Yes, the New York Times has confirmed that my method of publishing books is now more popular than ever. The NYT says more than three-quarters of a million books were published by 'microniche' publishers in 2009; by comparison, Random House published less than a third of that number.

I agree with the idea that using a microniche publisher, as I do, makes it possible and easy to get stories into print (and onto eReader screens). In fact, I use Lulu to get my books into print, and Smashwords to get my books onto screens. It's a great combination. I've now published eight fiction titles in the Adult Drama and Young Adult genres, and I was pleasantly shocked when one of my books spent some time at the top of the Smashwords best sellers list.

I write for myself and not necessarily to sell, but the notion that thousands of copies of my books are now in the hands of readers heartens me. I hope what I've written brings happiness to at least a few readers, but this could never happen in the old, traditional publishing model.

If you're interested, read the full New York Times article as it appeared in the Sunday Magazine on May 2, 2010.

Writing is now a grand adventure!

Back on top! SONS and BROTHERS in SEATTLE is #1 (again)

Number 1 best selling YA author! With SONS and BROTHERS in SEATTLE back on top of the Smashwords YA Best Sellers list, I can now claim to be a number one best selling author of young adult fiction.

In addition, ROBERT'S RIDE has moved up to #4, just five weeks after being published. I'm still rather in awe and humbled by all this, but it is exciting and amazing, too.

If you want to read SONS and BROTHERS in SEATTLE, the Smashwords coupon code NQ44T for a free copy is still valid until 5/5/2010. The current Smashwords special second edition includes free bonus chapters from the sequel!

Happy reading,

Wil

Follow Wilson James, author on Twitter

Now you can follow my tweets at Twitter or on this blog (see my version of the 'best of Twitter' on the left side of this page). I'll continue to provide news on my books, and celebrate when I have little bits of success, such as when one of my books spent 3 days at #1 on the YA best seller list on Smashwords, or when I had a record day for downloads this past week. I may also retweet important or interesting news from the world of books and writing.

Happy tweeting,

Top 2 Best Sellers for eBook week and 5-star review

Read an eBook Week has started, and is in full swing on Smashwords. There are hundreds of books for free and many others with 25% to 50% discounts. My books are all FREE this week.

When looking at the specials for Young Adults, two of my books are the top 2 Best Sellers, and I have to admit to being really thrilled about how well they've done! The top two are SONS and BROTHERS in SEATTLE and ROBERT'S RIDE.

I was also extraordinarily happy to see that one of my other books, PLAYING THE 'SON' CARD, just received a 5-star rating in a review.

See all the books for yourself, and

SONS and BROTHERS in SEATTLE hits #5 on Smashwords YA Best Seller list

In reviewing the end-month stats, I was awestruck to see that SONS and BROTHERS in SEATTLE has made it up to #5 on the all-time YA Best Sellers list on Smashwords.

I am truly amazed that this novel has done so well, and in only 2-1/2 months since getting published on Smashwords. If you have not read it yet, and want to, here's an exclusive coupon code for readers of this blog only; enter NQ44T at Smashwords checkout to get SONS and BROTHERS in SEATTLE for Free, until 5/5/2010.

And now more incredible news: I am further shocked, and more deeply humbled, to see that ROBERT'S RIDE has risen to #7 on that same list, only 2 weeks after being published on Smashwords.

As I said in a previous post, I write for myself, but I suppose the words of Jesse Stuart apply. He said, "Write something to suit yourself and many people will like it; write something to suit everybody, and scarcely anyone will care for it." I suppose that I could say a few people are liking what I've written.

With the Vancouver Games having ended (and there was a lot of excitement) , I will devote more time to my writing, and I suppose more people will find time to read. Don't forget 'Read an eBook Week' starts soon, so whatever you find that you like,

Happy reading,

Wil
